Hydraulic Henderson

Professor Emeritus Ray Whitmore

This book outlines the life of John Baillie Henderson, affectionately known as ‘Hydraulic Henderson’, who played a major role in producing water supply schemes for townships in Queensland during the late 1800s.

He was the first to install stream gauges on many Queensland rivers so as to better understand the hydraulics of the rainfall and run-off of the sub-tropical State.

His remarkable achievements in the field of water resources are deserving of recognition for the part they have played in tackling drought and climate change today.

Written by Professor Emeritus Ray Whitmore AM, and edited by Committee Members of Engineering Heritage Australia (Queensland), the book marks the 90th anniversary of Engineers Australia and 150 years of Queensland as an independent state.
