The future of narrowband communication technologies enabling the IoT - Webinar

Possible delivery methods: Standard Post within Australia, Express Post within Australia, Registered Post within Australia

Presenter: Geoff Sizer, 2016 Chair of Engineers Australia’s ITEE College and  CEO, Genesys Electronics Design

Description: Use of the Internet is ubiquitous for interconnecting computers, smartphones, mobile devices and a plethora of Cloud and server-based systems.  The Internet of Things promises to extend wireless Internet connectivity to a vastly increased number of devices, in particular low cost, low energy battery powered devices. Whilst low power wireless networks such as 6LoWPAN, Zigbee and Bluetooth Low Energy can provide local area connectivity, the choice for practical wide-area wireless connectivity has been essentially limited to 3G or 4G celluar data – with its high equipment cost, high energy consumption and expensive data transmission costs. Wide area narrowband communications technologies are required to enable low cost, low energy  IOT applications which are impractical using the current facilities available via 3G/4G networks. Despite the hype in the media, effective narrowband communications capabilities such as NB-IoT via 4G infrastructure appear to be a long way off.  Likewise the promised $5 modems and 5 year battery life.  The major telcos appear to be playing catchup in effectively servicing IoT applications. The presentation addresses the future of emerging wide area networking systems (Sigfox, LoRa) in Australia.  The evolution of narrowband technologies under the LTE 4G/5G umbrella will be demystified.
