Description: When IBM’s Watson computer famously beat the best Jeopardy game players in the world, in 2011, it demonstrated the power of cognitive computing for addressing questions or problems that previously only humans could comprehend and solve. However, what is really exciting the world of artificial intelligence is the opportunities being opened up by the Internet of Things.
With machines, structures and just about every other “thing” now being instrumented, cognitive computing can now be brought to bear on the kinds of problems that previously relied on deep human expertise and experience. The classic example of an engineer listening to the hum of an engineering and delivering a diagnosis can now be replicated through machine learning.
This presentation will provide an introduction to cognitive computing, show how it can be integrated with the Internet of Things and provide case study examples of the kinds of engineering challenges that it can be used to address.
About the presenter: John MacLeod has been IBM's lead architect for the Internet of Things for Australia & New Zealand for the last two and a half years. He has a Systems Engineering background, focusing on Requirements Management and Enterprise Architecture, both important aspects of bringing together the many components that make up the Internet of Things - effectively, a System of Systems.
