Description: The Internet of Things (IoT) incorporates billions of internet-connected devices that are often owned by different organisations and people who are deploying and using them for their own purposes. Federations of such IoT devices, often referred to as IoT things, can also deliver timely and accurate information that is needed to solve internet-scale problems that have been too difficult to tackle before.

IoT solutions must be capable of filtering, aggregating, correlating, and contextualising IoT information in real-time, on the move, in the cloud, and securely and must be capable of introducing data-driven changes to the physical world.

An overview of IoT solutions, collectively referred as the IoT platform, that have been developed to address these technical challenges and help springboard IoT Application Development will be discussed. The main focus is on open source components and standards developed jointly with other prominent international collaborators. A variety of IoT applications that have utilised these open source IoT platform components to provide solutions in manufacturing, energy and farming will also be described. In closing, future technology advancements in IoT will also be discussed.

About the presenter: Prof. Dimitrios Georgakopoulos is the Director of the Key Lab for IoT at Swinburne’s Digital Innovation Capability Platform which he started in July 2016.

Before that (2008-2014) he served as a Research Director at CSIRO’s ICT Centre and Executive Director of the Information Engineering Laboratory, the largest Computer Science research program in CSIRO and Australia.

Prior to joining CSIRO, he held research and management positions in several industrial laboratories in the USA.

Between 2014 and 2016 he was a full Professor at RMIT University and currently an Adjunct Professor at the Australian National University and a CSIRO Adjunct Fellow.

He has authored or co-authored 170+ journal and conference publications in computer science, which include a seminal paper in the area of Context Management for the Internet of Things (IoT) and is also the recipient of two outstanding paper awards from the IEEE Computer Society.

He has attracted significant research funding ($34M+) from various industry and government research funding agencies across the world. He currently conducts research and develops IoT solutions for industry and government partners in the manufacturing, energy and transportation sectors.
